Education at the Mining Museum

Bringing History to Life

The Scottish Mining Museum is a unique opportunity for first-hand learning in the context of a real colliery.

Coal-mining is a significant part of Scotland's history and the story of coal is an exciting and inspiring tale - vividly brought to life at the museum.

School and group visits are welcome all year round.

The Story of Coal

One of two major exhibitions, 'The Story of Coal' begins with coal's creation in the Carboniferous period 360 million years ago and follows man's efforts to extract it from the earth from the 13th century through to modern times.

A Race Apart

'A Race Apart' , the second major exhibition, is the story of the people of Scotland's mining communities. Here, the visitor can find out exactly what life was like - at home and at work - for the men and their families who toiled so hard for Scotland's black diamonds.
Roadway and Coalface

At the re-created underground roadway and coalface, visitors can hear and see exactly what a real working pit was like
Operations Centre

Our new hands-on Operations Centre has been designed specifically for school children and offers a stimulating, interactive learning experience linked to the 5-14 curriculum guidelines.

The principles of science and technology are graphically portrayed in a series of exhibits which offer children problems to solve through experiment, application of their knowledge, and creative thinking.

Can you build an archway with foam blocks to create a bridge strong enough to walk across, pedal fast enough on a bicycle to light up a light bulb, and work out how to use gears and pulleys to haul loads up slopes and shafts? Come along and find out!

'Magic Helmet' Tour

To tour the site, visitors wear 'magic helmets', which incorporate
remote-controlled headphones.

These explain what you are looking at as you go round the colliery.

Meet the Guides

All our guides are former miners, a real living link with the past, with years of experience of communicating with varied age groups.

With real tales to tell of their lives underground, they offer interactive learning at its flexible and natural best.
