Welcome to the Scottish Mining Museum

Welcome to the Scottish Mining Museum which, since its establishment in 1984, has provided a great day out for all the family. The Scottish Mining Museum is a nationally registered independent museum which was founded to preserve and present Scotland's mining heritage.

We're based at one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian colliery in Europe, the Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, just nine miles from Edinburgh on the A7.

Opening Hours

The museum is open 7 days a week as follows:-
March – October (summer) 10am – 5pm
(last entry to Magic Helmets tour 3.30pm)
November – February (winter) 10am – 4pm
(last entry to Magic Helmets tour 2.30pm)

Big Stuff Tours run every Wednesday and Sunday at 11am & 2pm. To pre-book your place on the tour call 0131 663 7519.

We recommend that you bring some warm clothes. Some areas of the museum can be fairly cold!

Our admission charges are:

Adult £5.95
Adult Group £4.95 per person
Children and Concessions £3.95
Children and Concessions Group £3.50 per person
Bus driver - free entry
Teachers on accompanying visits go free
One teacher per 10 pupils is recommended
To allow time for your visit, we recommend that you arrive by 1.30pm during winter opening times and by 2.30pm during summer opening times.
The museum is fully accessible for disabled people.
